AMERICAN INDIANS AND SPIRITS

The topic of ghosts in American Indian (they prefer this title over Native Americans) culture compared to those in Western mainstream ideas is a complex one. While there are many differences in the belief of spirits and ghosts between the American Indians and our mainstream culture, there are also many similarities and beliefs. I have always been fascinated by their history and culture and have made them the subject of many of my paintings and art work.

The American Indian belief system is one that concentrates on nature and man’s connection with nature and the spirit realm. While this sounds far from mainstream western religion and beliefs there are some surprising similarities, particularly when it comes to the idea of ghosts.

This is not a simple idea to understand. Native Americans originally totaled over 20 million people broken up into approximately 500 tribes each with their own variant on deities, spirits and the afterlife.

In the east, some tribes like the Delaware Indians believed in a “Great Spirit” which was a good divinity that would work through lesser, smaller spirits to control the weather and other aspects of nature. This Great Spirit occurs in different tribe beliefs in various incarnations.

Some of the elements of tribal beliefs mirror those in Western Christianity. The Cherokee tribe believed that earth was a Middle World. Above lived the spirits of deceased people and animals, and below was a place of ghosts, bad spirits and monsters much like Chri
stianity’s heaven and hell.

Each tribe has its own spirits which often take the form of animals, as nature was intrinsic to the Native American way of life. These spirits may take the form of bears, wolves, buffalo, eagles or horned creatures, and can bring rain that will help crops grow or create drought and destructive storms.

Ghosts of the Dead

When it comes to death, many Native Americans view it as moving from one realm to another. As Chief Seattle of the Suquamish tribe explained in 1854, “There is no death. Only a change of worlds”

Each Native American tribe had its own version of burial rites, which depended on a number of factors such as the surrounding landscape (for example, Alaskan Native Americans would often leave their dead to freeze). While in the Christian west, the dead were buried on consecrated ground close to churches close to the living, Native American cemeteries were often placed in remote areas, away from settlements. Even better was on an island, such as those along the Columbia River as it was believed that the spirits of the dead could not cross water.

Ghosts are a personal idea in mainstream culture. While some people are scared of the idea of a ghost, others may be comforted by the idea of contacting someone they have lost. However, the idea of a ghost in American Indian culture is one of a negative energy rather than the spirits which reside in nature.

Some American Indian tribes also believed that burial rites were important enough to incur the wrath of the dead if done incorrectly. If the deceased did not receive the appropriate burial rites, they would be earth-bound and destined to continue walking the earth and haunt the living. It is also suggested that some believed the same for the dead whose graves had been desecrated.

Through the Anglo-Saxon period up to the Victorian age, criminals and those who committed suicide in Britain and in places within North America were traditionally buried at crossroads without the usual burial rites. This was considered an added punishment for their crimes or for taking their own life, as they would not be prepared for judgement day. To counteract the lack of burial rites, the dead were buried at crossroads to stop their ghosts returning to earth and haunting the living.

Some tribes, including the Apache, a nomadic tribe, went a little further and believed that all the dead resented the living. When someone in the tribe died, the corpse was quickly buried and his possessions and home burned. The family would perform a ritual to purify them and move on to stop the ghost of the deceased from finding them.

Haunting the Living

In mainstream culture, it is often believed that a violent or highly emotional death will result in a haunting or ghost. This can take the form of a poltergeist, a particularly strong spirit that can physically move objects and create a disturbance. Very much like our own western belief of poltergeists (German for noisy ghost) in our own paranormal studies.

The Navajo (or Dine which means "The People") also started a belief in Native American culture of “ghost sickness.” This was the name given to someone who fell ill with particular ailments. It was thought that the ghost was trying to take the living into the next realm with them. The symptoms of ghost sickness included nausea, hallucinations, feeling suffocated and fever.
Similarly, tribe believed that if someone died from a sudden illness or suicide, or met their end in a violent manner, they would return as a destructive ghost or “Chindi,” haunting their remaining family. They believed that the final breath of a person releases the Chindi, which contains all of the sin of that person’s life.  If the Chindi is released outdoors, it can dissipate on its own given time.  In fact, some Chindi become dust devils (known as “chiindii”), with the clockwise rotating funnels being “good” and the counterclockwise containing “evil”.  If, on the other hand, the Chindi is released inside a home or lodge (Hogan), it must be abandoned or ritually cleansed to remove the spirit.

As we become more tolerant with other's beliefs of the supernatural our culture evolves and so the similarities begin to grow. One only has to read the American Indians' Ten Commandments and see just how much we are all brothers and sisters under the skin.

I'LL HAVE A DJINN AND TONIC

The more I research my subject for answers the more questions arise. For every person, every organization, and every paranormal investigative team that I’ve contact with the questions and evidence for the cause of my haunting situation that started six years ago there is a different answer.  Here are some of the variety of opinions/answers I have received over the last few years of what I am dealing with in my home and basement.  “They” are former resident spirits stuck here on the Earthly plane, “they” are deceased people in the form of shadow people, “they” are inter-dimensional beings coming out of a portal, “they” are non- humans-never were, “they” are aliens, “they” are demons, “they” are demons disguised as children, and “they” are shape-shifting creatures left here by a curse from Native Americans! WOW!
Here’s my favorite.  Did I mention the Djinn? (also known as Jinn or Genie)  There’s a theory that there is no such thing as (aliens, extraterrestrials as in occupants UFOs, etc.) and that these don’t really exist because as the Christian Bible says "they" are fallen angels (aka the Nephilim, who are also Demons).  Here is where the the Djinn fit in.  In accordance with the Koran and Islamic tradition Djinn fall somewhere in between humans and angels as they can choose to be either good, bad or be neutral-take your pick. Whew!

I have come to the consensus that does anyone really know what the hell is in my basement! It’s enough to make my head explode! That could actually be a plus for the Zombie element (which didn't make the list) as they can eat my splattered brains from the floor. Tasty...but needs garlic.
So what does one do? Do I pick one from column A and one from Column B from the paranormal menu?I'm trying to live a life interrupted frequently by mischievous and sometimes nasty ghosts but it's an all out spectral buffet! The answer for me so far is that I've decided to soldier on and leave no stone unturned to find answers. Please don't tell me there's an elemental under the stones!

I have contacted members in the scientific community about some photos of my most compelling evidence and ask for help: a spirit pixel photo, weird anomalies on walls, shadow people, poltergeist activity caught on tape, and EVPS but have yet to hear back. I have tried to explain the full circumstances of how we obtained the evidence and hopefully there will be some thoughtful recommendations but it could be that they simply don’t know. It’s not their fault really. We are in unknown territory and it can be scary. In a sense we are paranormal pioneers.  My hope is that whoever would like to do scientific research on this phenomenon has an open mind to the fact that there can be actual supernatural entities and things beyond our 3 dimensional world.
Places can be haunted. People can be haunted. Objects can be haunted. My manuscript could be haunted! You'll have to wait to read my sequel to see how that turned out. All I know is I’m not giving up and leaving my home as some have suggested. Let “them” leave! OK, now where’s that drink?!

THE HAUNTED AUTHOR

When I first entertained the idea of writing a book, urged by my friends and family members after hearing of the unusual events and happenings at the estate of my deceased friend , I had no intention of writing it myself. I felt if I provided the story and the materials, even possibly be interviewed, then someone else could do a better job. Having no formal experience other than a creative writing classes in high school and a one-act play I wrote for a college assignment, ironically about a revengeful ghost, I was on the learning curve. I have always considered myself an artist first ( not a writer) and believed telling my stories in a visual way.

Not thinking myself as an author? This may seem strange coming from someone who is has scored a literary agent, Laurie Hawkins of Collage Literary, who has been a real rock of support and always held an unwavering belief in me. Laurie signed me to a contract in summer of 2011. This was a brave act for her as she has since been the recipient of some very strange paranormal activity since taking on my project. (nothing like having your client's manuscript being printed out and the machine spits out a metal clamp over your head and across the room!)

In July 1012, I produced the video along with my son and other talented artists last year. All the props came from the Estate of Horror. If you look at the first 10 seconds of the video as the door is opening you hear a brief bark of a dog-EVP-then a tall brim hat shadow man shows up on the right of the white paneled door. No one in the film crew were wearing hats that night and no dogs were out at midnight when we filming. We actually have 4 still photos that captured his image too. We had sightings of the shadow man before at our house, and found out he is possibly an early 1900 resident who murdered his wife on the property and went to jail for the crime.

The psychological and physical toll on me and my family have been enormous. We have gotten used to living a paranormal life everyday but it's not easy. You never get used to looking over your shoulder or being scratched while taking a bath or think you've seen a shadow floating on the ceiling or wall while watching TV or hearing a horrible growl or the door rattle to your basement. Even the sudden bouts of nausea and stabbing pains (psychic) in the stomach while moving boxes in the basement did not deter me. I felt that the best defensive was an offense!  I decided that others needed to know what happened to me, and the ghosts needed to be put in their place. This was MY home and they were not going to frighten me away!
So specters beware. My book is published! I even designed the book cover! It's up for sale!
5 STAR REVIEWS! Read this book and find out why people can't put it down or won't read it before going to bed! Leave your lights on!

POLTERGEISTS CLEAN UP!

I saw this cartoon on Queen Mary Paranormal "Beyond the Veil" posted by Jennifer Tyler and had the inspiration for my blog this week! Thanks for posting this Jennifer!

This is very funny but rang true with me. I was reminded of the time that my son Chris and I had just such a funny experience with poltergeists while cleaning out my deceased friend Paul's estate. This was among the many incidents that occurred while being the executor of my friend's estate that I wrote a book, Estate of Horror.  It was in July 4th weekend 2009 when we were confronted with something so crazy and unusual that to this day it remains unexplained.

EXCERPT FROM: CHAPTER 16
FIREWORKS ON THE ROOF TOPS

The basement was well on its way to being cleared out - which had been no easy feat - but there were still some small pockets of clutter and boxes on the shelves to go through. I decided we would only spend an hour in the basement and spend the rest of the day upstairs. We had the Purple Heart Charity coming the next day, Friday, and we planned to give them forty boxes of items, the maximum you could donate at one time.

(We don't know if this is a face that we captured among the books. It would be a    likely place for my friend's spirit to appear if it were an anomaly as he was a huge book collector. What is strange is that it does resemble my deceased friend).

We made our way into the basement and Chris shook his head. “I was hoping some white wizard would have waived his magic staff and all the rest of this would be cleared out,” he said.

(Back of Paul's basement -right side)

“No such luck, Chris, Gandolf has better things to do. We’ll have to do it the mortal way and get our hands dirty. Oh, man, look at this place!”  I walked and saw slides around the room in clusters, all over the floor. Although there had been a few things left on the floor, I knew that Chris and I hadn’t left it that way.

Chris surveyed the basement and saw a trail of slides leading to the sump pump drain.

                                                 (Trail of slides)

“Oh, for crying out loud, look at all of this. It’s been trashed.”
“I don’t get it,” I said. “What’s this supposed to mean?”

We wanted to be done as soon as possible so we could be upstairs the rest of the day.
“I’m in no mood to start sweeping the floor again. Just leave it for now.”

Chris helped me pack some boxes of books that they library didn’t want. When he picked up a large book from a shelf, some 8”x 10” black and white photos fell out from between the pages.

“Hey Mom, look at these.” He held up some pictures of Paul in a swimsuit and in a business suit. “What was he, a model or something?”

“Yes, he was,” I answered.

Paul had a long history of modeling that started in college. Shortly before his death, he told me that he had posed for a photographer friend of his for some new portrait shots and did some modeling for an art class.

“He was in good shape for a guy his age,” Chris said

“Best shape of his life and he dies of a heart attack. Go figure.” I couldn’t get over the irony of it all.

Just then, a cassette tape flew through the air and hit the wooden magazine rack near Mr. Jaeger’s workbench.

“Is that you, Paul?” I called out. “Are your parents here too?”

We hadn’t brought the tape recorder because we planned to get the work done and leave. Now I regretted that we hadn’t. There was an eerie silence. Nothing happened.

“Ok, well we have to get back to work,” I shouted to no one in particular. This is nuts. I thought.

Bang! A slide hit the metal cabinet.

(Slide thrown to floor with a sock. The ghosts really have a sense of humor!)

“I’m getting pretty tired of picking up after you,” I said.

Bang! Something hit the cement floor opposite from us.

“What is this? Do you become brats in the afterlife?” I felt like I was dealing with some mischievous three-year-old.

“Mom, look there’s a metal shovel in the bucket over there.”
We walked over to the bucket and saw a long-handled garden shovel inside it.
“How the hell did it get in there?” Chris asked.

(This was an unnerving discovery seeing such a heavy object tossed into the bucket by the poltergeist).

I looked at him and grinned sarcastically. “Are you forgetting that we’re in the frigging fourth dimension of the Twilight Zone?” I asked.

“Right I forgot!”

If you want to use your energy to lift something that heavy why don’t you pick up after yourselves?” I called out. “This place is a mess.” I was angry now. “Yeah, what do you care…you’re dead.”

We picked up a few boxes to take upstairs when suddenly we noticed something different by the staircase. Every single slide and object that had been lying on the floor was gone.

“Are you freaking kidding me?” Chris exclaimed.

“Oh my God, Chris.  Look!” I pointed to the shelf near the staircase. The slides were now neatly stacked, one on top of the other, in three piles.

“No freaken’ way,” Chris said shaking his head.

We put the boxes down and looked around. Everything cleared off the floor towards the sump pump, too. It was astonishing!

slide thrown on the sump pump)

“Thank you,” I said to the invisible cleanup crew. “Now, why don’t you clean up the other side too?”

“I think you’re pushing it, Mom,” Chris said as he made his way upstairs again.

“If they are all sooo powerful,” I gestured around with my hands as I followed behind him, “they can clean up the rest of the mess they made.”

A few minutes later we returned to the basement and were talking about what to finish bringing up, when we stopped in our tracks.  Every single item that had covered the floor near the wardrobe closets was gone. I looked around and saw some of the objects on the Franklin stove—a blue hanger, a box of tissue and a Christmas ornament in the shape of a dove.

(Objects that got picked up)

On the short metal table near the closets, the slides were neatly stacked in piles.  I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and started to laugh. Chris pulled off his Phillies baseball cap and scratched his head.

(I know many are sensitive about mentioning "orbs" but I wanted to include this     photo to show the area where the poltergeist activity had occurred).

“Ok, they really listened to you, Mom.”

I was dumbfounded. They had heard me and did what I asked.

“No one’s ever going to believe this,” I said.

END OF EXCERPT

As with writing any type of paranormal book, there are the skeptics questioning that these things don't really happen. My goal in writing my book was to share my experience with others who identify with this and have also lived through their own supernatural phenomenon. It is not my goal in life to convert skeptics. They have their opinions and I have mine.I only ask that people remain open minded and not readily dismiss what they do not understand.
As Shakespeare once wrote,
"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy".
Hamlet (1.5.167-8), Hamlet to Horatio

Now I wonder if the ghosts do windows?
